Some individuals plan their method into vanlife. Spreadsheets. Timelines. Years of analysis.
Heather Sossoman did not have that type of time.
The Second The whole lot Shifted
“The final ten years of my life have been actually arduous,” Heather tells me. “Elevating three youngsters alone, carrying that weight—after which I misplaced my youthful brother abruptly.”
“That loss fully altered my perspective. The fact that none of us are assured tomorrow hit dwelling in an actual method.”
For Heather, grief did not result in retreat. It led to a promise.
“I made a decision I wasn’t going to attend. I used to be going to do what I promised him—stay a life large enough for the each of us.”
And a van appeared like one of the best ways to do this.
Meet Lucy
Her first vacation spot after choosing up Lucy? The Outer Banks of North Carolina.
However that was just the start.
“I’ve at all times liked to journey, however just a few weeks right here and there wasn’t sufficient,” Heather explains. “I wished to take my time exploring as many Nationwide Parks and State Parks as I may. Slowly. Not dashing by a week-long trip—truly experiencing it.”
Now she’s a full-time traveler. Solo. Following the seasons, the landscapes, and her personal curiosity.
From Large Cities to Large Skies
Heather spent most of her life in huge cities. Her aim on the highway? The other.
“Nature. That is what I am chasing. The seashore, lakes, desert, mountains—I’ve liked all of them. And I’ve a lot extra to see.”
She talks about pulling into a brand new park and simply sitting with it. The awe. The quiet. The size of one thing greater than the day-to-day.
“Every time I make my method someplace new, I am simply in awe of the sweetness.”
Studying to Observe Pleasure
Since hitting the highway, Heather has discovered to paddleboard. Her climbing abilities have grown tremendously. But it surely’s greater than new hobbies—it is a shift in how she strikes by the world.
“I’ve by no means had the time or capability to only comply with my very own passions and joys,” she says. “Lucy has given me the time and house to do this.”
There’s one thing in the best way she says it. Not boastful. Simply true.
Do It Scared
Once I ask Heather what she’d need different individuals to know—individuals sitting on the sting of a giant choice—she does not hesitate.
“Since I picked up my van, I’ve adopted ‘Do It Scared’ as my life motto.”
She continues: “We’re by no means going to really feel fully assured in attempting one thing new, making a giant change, or chasing a aim. And that is okay. It simply means now we have to do it scared—as a result of we solely get one shot at this lovely life.”
